Open Saturdays is a welcoming RPG and story games group that meets every other Saturday in Edinburgh. No preparation, previous experience or sign-ups needed.
What games do you play?
We play a mixture of big-name RPGs, indie RPGs, and story games. Each week there is a featured game and additional tables which decide what they want to play on the night. The featured game is advertised in advance on Facebook and via the ORC Edinburgh forum.
Here is a haphazard and non-comprehensive list of games we have played in the past: Dungeons & Dragons (5E), Eclipse Phase, Paranoia, Hunter: The Gathering, Fiasco, Fate Accelerated, Follow, Dungeon World, Microscope, Kingdom, Best Friends, InSpectres, Dread, A Penny for My Thoughts.
What is an RPG? What is a story game?
RPG stands for role-playing game. It’s a game where players take on the parts of characters in a fictional world by describing what they do and acting out what they say. Story games are a broader category where players don’t necessarily take charge of a particular character.
I have never played a tabletop roleplaying game before, can I come to Open Saturdays?
Yes, you are very welcome. We will be nice to you: everyone was new once.
Seriously, though. I’ve never even opened a rulebook.
You’ll be fine. We often play new games that no-one else has played before anyway, so you’ll be on an equal footing.
Do I need to book a place?
Nope, just rock up between 18:30 and 19:00 and say ‘Hi’. We’re the group with the polyhedral dice and the geek-themed t-shirts.
Do I have to come every week?
No. All the games are one-offs, so you can come as many or as few times as you wish.
Do I need to being anything?
The facilitators will provide the necessary equipment, but if you have your own dice/stationary/play aids they will always come in handy!
Do I need to prepare?
There is no need to prepare. Facilitators will be welcoming to people who haven’t played before.
Can I arrive late or leave early?
We’ll try to accommodate latecomers, but (depending on the game) there’s no guarantee we’ll be able to do so.
If you need to leave early, please let whoever is facilitating know in advance. For most games, this isn’t an issue at all.
How do I sign up to run a game?
If you’d like to GM/facilitate the featured game, just contact James and he’ll put you on the timetable. All are welcome and encouraged to do this, regardless of previous experience.
Alternatively, you can just bring what you need to play and offer to run one of the overspill tables on the night.
Open Saturday slots are three hours long in total, including any character generation or rules explanation necessary. You are welcome to bring a one-off that advertises a campaign, but please don’t offer games that require more than one session to play.
I’d like to play a particular game, but I’m not confident enough to GM/facilitate. Will you run it for me?
Please be encouraged to try your hand at running a game yourself!
Are you inclusive and accessible?
Feel free to contact me if you have any access needs you wish to discuss.
